Candle Care
Candle Care Instructions
At Main + Page, we take great pride in creating beautiful, handcrafted candles using the finest, paraffin-free, coconut apricot soy wax, and natural wooden wicks. To ensure you get the most enjoyment and longevity from your candles, please follow the care instructions below:
1. The First Burn: Make It Count!
When you light your candle for the first time, make sure to allow the wax to melt all the way across the top of the candle. This can take 2-3 hours, depending on the size of the candle. Why?
This helps create an even wax pool and prevents tunneling (where the candle burns down the center but leaves wax on the edges). By allowing a full melt on the first burn, your candle will burn more evenly in future uses.
2. Trimming the Wooden Wick
Before each burn, always trim your wooden wick to about 1/4 inch in height. This helps prevent the wick from becoming too tall and producing excess smoke. Trim the wick by gently pinching or cutting off the charred end.
Tip: You can use a wick trimmer or scissors to ensure a clean, controlled cut. Keeping the wick trimmed ensures a steady, controlled burn and helps prevent the wick from “drowning.”
3. Burning Time
We recommend burning your candle for 2-3 hours at a time. Burning for too long can cause the wick to become unstable or the wax to overheat, potentially affecting the scent throw or causing the wick to drown. If your candle starts to “flicker” or the flame gets too large, extinguish it, trim the wick, and relight.
4. Wick Drowning
Sometimes, wooden wicks may “drown” if too much wax builds up around them, or if the wick is not trimmed properly. If this happens, you can easily fix it!
Here’s what to do:
- Extinguish the flame by gently blowing on it or using a wick dipper (if you have one).
- Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch, removing any excess charred wood.
- Wait for the wax to harden slightly (but not completely) before relighting. This gives the wick a chance to dry out and start fresh.
- Light your candle again. The wick should now burn more evenly.
If you continue to have issues with your wick, contact me and I'll be happy to provide guidance or a replacement if necessary.
5. Never Leave a Candle Unattended
Never leave your candle burning unattended or near anything flammable. Always extinguish the flame when leaving a room or going to bed.
6. Safety First
- Always place your candle on a flat, stable surface to avoid tipping.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
- Be mindful of drafts, as they can cause uneven burning and may cause your wick to flicker or extinguish.
- Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
7. When It’s Time to Extinguish
To safely extinguish your candle, use a wick dipper or gently blow it out. This will help prevent smoke and ensure a clean extinguish. Never use water to put out a candle, as this can cause the wax to splatter.
8. Storing Your Candle
Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. This will help preserve the fragrance and prevent the wax from melting prematurely.
9. Reuse Your Cement Candle Jar
Once your candle has burned down, you can easily reuse the jar by cleaning it out. It’s the perfect way to give your candle a second life as a decorative container, plant holder, or storage jar! If you want your jar refilled, you can send it back to me and I will pour a new candle at a discounted rate.
By following these simple steps, you’ll ensure that your handcrafted Main + Page candle burns beautifully every time, providing you with hours of enjoyment and fragrance. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to help!
